Class 6 is taught by Mr Dickson, with the support of Mrs Young and Mrs Brtichford.
The children follow the National Curriculum, with the support of Chris Quigley skills. There is a significant focus on ensuring that our children are being prepared for their secondary school education. Therefore, much of what they will be learning is closely linked to Year 7. The children will be encouraged to write and analyse pieces of work linked to a class book that they are studying, undertake mathematical problem solving including using algebra and equations and to complete tasks independently both at home and at school to a high quality.
As with all the classes in our school we believe in celebrating the uniqueness of every child and encourage them to flourish and shine in all that they do, preparing them for life’s journey.
Please use the tabs to see any information relating to year 6. We are continuing to use Microsoft TEAMS for any other additional information and communication.
We are also a Marvellous Me school! Marvellous me is a parent communication App that allows you to take an active part in your child’s learning. Each day children can earn badges for showing good learning or behaviour attitudes and teachers can let you know what activities they have been taking part in as well as send you messages. The platform works through a Smart Phone App and a username and password has been sent to you.
Each week the children will receive a book which relates tot he phonic sounds they are learning. This is accessible on Bug Club. Please follow the link to access Bug Club. A video explaining how bug club works is also available on our You tube channel.
Log on to Bug Club to find a selection of online books with questions and quizzes to answer. Every child has been issued with a username, school code and password.
Reading Road Maps and Challenges Our Reading Challenge lists comprise of 50 books that Year 6 children may like to read before they leave Year 6. They are fantastic quality books – fiction and non fiction – that have been recommended for their age group. All are available in school for the children to borrow. All the children have access to a challenge tick sheet which they can use to keep track of the books they have read. If they read all 50 there is a reward! These can be accessed below also for those of you who may want to purchase books for at home or read yourself alongside your child!
Our Year 6 reading Road Map outlines the texts the children will use in Year 6 for Guided reading. These are always subject to change or to be studied in a slightly different order.
Why is reading with my child in Year 6 still important? Whilst children in Year 6 are generally fluent able readers who prefer to read independently, reading to your child or alongside your child even at 10 and 11 still has many benefits.
* It allows you to discuss tricky language and Vocabulary – often children at 10 and 11 still come across words they don’t understand or have met before * It allows you to question your child about what they have read * It continues to be a bonding experience * Create your own book club – read the same book as your child and then regularly discuss the story – they will most certainly want to beat you to finishing first! * Make reading fun by trying to interact with the author via twitter, facebook or instagram together
The children have access to a range of online platforms that they can use at home. Good practise would be that children read every night alongside an adult for 10 minutes.
From the Summer term homework expectations have changed.
We would ask all children in Year 1 to: read at least 4 times a week using either Bug Club or their physical reading book. play 10 games on Numbots or TTRS (depending on ability) across the week.
A menu of homework is also provided that can be accessed below. This is optional and children can choose from it what they would like to complete. It is generally always linked to their topic for the term.
