Yr 1 reading challenge – 50 books to read in Year 1
Year 1 Challenge Checklist
Our Year 1 reading Road Map outlines the texts the children will use in Year 1 for Guided reading. Guided reading isn’t introduced immediately in Year 1 so the road map isn’t complete as it is in other years. To begin, reading in Year 1 focuses on the continuation of phonics and individual reading. Guided reading plans are always subject to change or to be studied in a slightly different order.
Why is reading with my child in Year 1 important?
Whilst some children in Year 1 are beginning to become more fluent readers, reading to your child or alongside your child still has many benefits.
* It allows you to discuss tricky language and Vocabulary
* It allows you to question your child about what they have read
* It continues to be a bonding experience
* Create your own book club – read the same book as your child and then regularly discuss the story – they will most certainly want to beat you to finishing first!
* Make reading fun by trying to interact with the author via twitter, facebook or instagram together
Children at Year 1 need to read alongside an adult. It helps them to practise and develop their fluency and also is a great way to continue to develop their love for reading. Reading with your child and to your child allows you to help them develop this skill. Reading with your child allows you to hear their phonic ability, practise phonic sounds and help with their decoding skills. Reading to your child allows them to hear expression, understand how stories work, explore language and just enjoy a range of stories.
